Fall Reset for Perimenopause: Why September Beats January
A fall reset for perimenopause works better than a January one because September brings a real schedule change instead of a calendar flip. From September 1 to Thanksgiving you have 86 days, which is more than enough time to build protein, strength, and a plan for the wine into a routine that holds through the holidays.
The first Friday night game of the season, Angie is on a metal bleacher with a stadium blanket and two boys somewhere out on that field, and the entire fall is already written on the calendar taped to her fridge. Practices, away games, three dinners a week that happen in a car.
Gina is home on a Friday in October with a glass of white and no intention of giving it up.
Both of those are fall, and neither one is a reason to wait until January.
Why September Beats January for a Fall Reset
Researchers at Wharton call itthe fresh start effect. Across three field studies, Google searches for the word "diet," gym visits, and commitments to pursue goals all rose after what they call temporal landmarks, and the landmarks they list include the start of a new week, a new month, a new year, and a new semester. The landmark files your past imperfections into a previous chapter and lets you take a wider view of your life.
September is on that list, and it is the only one that changes how your days actually run. January 1 is a date. The week school starts is a bedtime, a lunch to pack, a car that leaves at the same time every morning.
Habits also take longer to stick than anyone tells you. When 96 volunteers tracked one new daily behavior for twelve weeks, reaching automaticity tooka median of 66 days, with a range from 18 to 254. Start on September 1 and day 66 lands on November 6, twenty days before Thanksgiving. Start on January 1 and day 66 lands in early March, long after the February slump has already taken most people out.
You walk into the holidays already consistent instead of using them as the reason to start over in the new year.
You do not need more willpower in January. You need a routine that was already running by Halloween.
What Changed in Your Body, and Why the Old Plan Stopped Working
We have collected 1,745 intake responses from women coming to us between February 2024 and June 2026. The median age is 47, 84 percent are between 40 and 59, and about 80 percent report a menopause stage. The single most common thing they write, in their own words, is a version of "what used to work is not working anymore."
They are describing something measurable. In a four-year longitudinal study that followed women through the menopausal transition with room-calorimeter measurement, 24-hour energy expendituredropped by roughly 200 calories a day, enough on its own to move body weight over time. Composition shifts alongside it. Across every BMI category, postmenopausal women showlower lean mass and more visceral fat than premenopausal women, and in normal-weight women the visceral fat area climbed from an average of 36.4 square centimeters before menopause to 55.7 after.
So the belly is not in your head, and the plan you used at 35 is not failing because you got lazy. Your body changed the inputs it needs, and nobody sent you the memo.
Eating less is what most women reach for first, and it takes muscle down with it, which is the one tissue you cannot afford to lose right now.
The January Reset and the September Reset, Side by Side
What the table cannot show is how it feels to arrive at Thanksgiving already in a rhythm. One of our VIP members put it plainly: "Since I joined for the 6-week last September, I feel amazing. I've lost 26 pounds, significant inches lost, clothes are fitting better than they have since I last joined several years ago. You all are helping me through these challenging menopause times. I have so much energy, crave healthy foods."
She started in September.
The Three Things We Have Our Ladies Do in September
None of this asks you to give up the food you like. We would never build a plan around that, because a plan you resent is a plan you quit in six weeks.
Put protein first at every meal. The ESPEN expert group recommendsat least 1.0 to 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day for healthy older adults, which puts a 150-pound woman somewhere around 68 to 82 grams as a floor, and most women we meet are eating half that. Start with breakfast, because that is where the gap almost always is. Greek yogurt, eggs, a scoop in your coffee, turkey and sweet potato chili left over from Sunday.
Lift three days a week, and count the steps in between. Muscle is the tissue that changed, so muscle is the thing you train back. Thirty minutes counts. Angie does hers before the boys are up and Gina walks the neighborhood after dinner, and neither of us is doing two-hour gym sessions in October.
Put the wine and the pizza in the plan, not around it. A 6-ounce glass of Sauvignon Blanc runs about 150 calories, and it fits inside your carbs or your fats when you know the number. The women who last are the ones who planned for the tailgate on Saturday instead of pretending it was not on the calendar. As one of our members said about the 80/20 approach, "It's not oppressive. Allows for reality."
When to Start, and What to Do About Halloween
Start the week school goes back if:
Your schedule is about to tighten up on its own and you want to build the new routine into it
You have a moment coming in November or December, a trip, a reunion, a photo, that you would like to feel good for
You have tried starting in January more than once and watched it come apart by mid-February
Give yourself a slower on-ramp if:
You are still traveling through Labor Day and cannot be consistent for another two weeks
You are coming off a GLP-1 or adjusting a medication and want to build the food and lifting habits underneath it first
You have less than three hours a week to give this right now, in which case start with protein alone and add the lifting in October
Halloween is not the obstacle. Halloween on day 55 of a routine is a Tuesday with candy in it, and you eat two peanut butter cups and go on with your week. Halloween on day 3 of a January-style overhaul is the thing that ends the whole plan. There is no wagon to fall off if what you are doing is built for real life in the first place.
Put the scale away for the fall. Pick a marker you will feel instead, a pair of jeans, the stairs at the stadium, the number of days you lifted. One of our six-week clients named her win as "3 inches off my waist," and another named hers as "more energy and fitting in my clothes again." Neither of those shows up the way you want on a Tuesday morning weigh-in.
